Itinerary of: Marrakech to Fes

Day 1: From the Red City to the Gorges

Your adventure begins with a morning departure from Marrakech. We will journey east, ascending into the magnificent High Atlas Mountains via the legendary Tizi n’Tichka Pass. This winding mountain road offers ever-changing, panoramic vistas of Berber villages clinging to hillsides and vast, rugged landscapes, providing countless opportunities for breathtaking photographs.

Our first significant stop is the legendary Ksar of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will have time to walk through its earthen-walled alleys and learn about its history as a crucial trading post on the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. After a traditional lunch in the area, we continue our drive through the picturesque Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, eventually climbing up into the dramatic rock formations of the Dades Canyons. You will spend the evening at a charming hotel or riad overlooking the gorge, where a delicious, home-cooked dinner awaits.

Day 2: Canyons and Camel Treks into the Sahara

After breakfast, we depart for the stunning Todra Gorges, a monumental canyon renowned for its towering rock walls that rise over 300 meters high. You can take a refreshing stroll through the gorge alongside its clear river, absorbing the sheer scale of this natural wonder. We will also drive through the lush Tinghir Oasis, a stunning sea of green palm groves contrasting sharply with the surrounding arid hills.

The landscape then transforms as we enter the pre-Saharan plain, with the first golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appearing on the horizon. Upon arrival in Merzouga, you will be welcomed with mint tea before mounting a gentle camel for a serene trek into the heart of the dunes. This camel ride is timed perfectly for you to watch the spectacular desert sunset. Your home for the night is an authentic Berber desert camp, where a hearty Moroccan dinner is served under a blanket of stars, followed by the enchanting sounds of Berber drums around a campfire.

Day 3: Sunrise over the Dunes and the Journey to Fes

We highly recommend waking early to witness the spectacular sunrise over the Sahara Desert, a profoundly peaceful experience. After breakfast at the camp, you will take a 4×4 vehicle back to Merzouga to meet your driver and begin the final leg of your journey to Fes.

The road to Fes is an adventure in itself, taking you through the vast date palm oasis of the Ziz Valley and the scenic Midelt region, nestled in the Atlas Mountains, where we will stop for lunch. The journey continues through the cedar forests of Azrou, where you might spot troops of playful Barbary macaques, before a final pass through Ifrane, known as “Morocco’s Switzerland” for its unique alpine architecture. We will arrive in the imperial city of Fes in the late afternoon.
